Other Voices – Shawna

I’ve always said that I wanted this blog to be more than just me yammering I mean reflecting on how life goes after a brain injury. Maybe I’m a good writer, maybe not. I do know that no matter how I write, not everyone will click with what I have to say here or the way I say it. As I get to know fellow survivors and caretakers I’m encouraging them to be a guest on this blog.

To start off this new section I’m calling Other Voices I’d like to introduce Shawna, a writer living in wide open Western Canada, with a great affection for the life inside each being on her farm.  Continue reading

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

I haven’t quite figured out how I feel about all the messages out there but this essay is pretty good. Wish I couldn’t agree.

Like It or Not, That Day Will Come Around Each Year

The other day I was walking with a friend and as we walked she deliberated on what to call the day her injury struck. It was coming up and something about the notion of calling it an anniversary was bothering her. She was wondering if it was something to celebrate. Of course she was hearing supportive messages urging her to celebrate her strength. How far she’d come in her recovery after another year has passed. The life she still has ahead of her to live. All that encouragement in large part because of how hard she has worked to restore herself.

A Discussion of How a TBI Can Affect the Survivor

From brainline.org, a nice review of the different sorts of conditions a survivor may be left to deal with long after health insurance no longer wants to cover the doctors and therapists.

Another triathlete’s account of a recent accident

This is detailed account of an accident that a fellow triathlete just had this week. He does quite a thorough job of describing the acute phase of recovering from a head injury. Time will tell how much of an injury he’s sustained but this post is a good read for anyone looking to learn more about potential traumatic brain injuries.

I cannot tell if this link will post anything more than the link but here it is.

TBI Support Communities on the Web

It’s been a while since I have posted anything with regularity and I decided to speak to that in this post. I stopped writing too much about being a TBI survivor on my own Facebook wall because, well, those details aren’t something everyone will understand. Or want to read for that matter. What really gets lost

This is one of the brain injury survivors that I’ve been following. She puts things into words that I can empathize with. Sadly.

At a keyboard, I find my relief

So, I have been noodling over the conundrum about why people don’t seem to A) believe me when I tell them I’m having a hard time, or B) really get the extent to which I have to grapple with my issues.

Maybe people just don’t believe that it’s possible for someone to be as functional as I am, and have all the issues I say I have.

Maybe people just don’t know what it’s like to have to hassle with this crap, day in and day out.

Or maybe they figure that if I’m not doubled over in pain, or stammering and apparently struggling for words, or not having visible trouble, then I must be fine. If I don’t look like the kind of person they’ve been trained to look for, then I must not be that kind of person, right?

Uh, OK…

You’re just

Those words are at the start to so many different sentences. I don’t want to get into a rant here. I only wanted to get this on the record.

Wanna play ‘finish the sentence’, TBI style?
